Building Climate Resilience of Watershed in Mountain Eco-Regions Selection of Consulting Services for: NDF (C56) Package 1, Advisory and capacity building Services in Nepal

Description of the project and Services provided:

The BCRWME Project aims to provide access to more reliable water resources for domestic purposes and irrigation for communities living in the watersheds of Nepal river systems which are significantly vulnerable to climate change. Access and reliability to water resources will be improved through a participatory program of integrated watershed management with interventions in upland areas to increase surface water storage and groundwater recharge. The project will demonstrate ways to protect water sources while at the same time developing them for efficient use. The communities in the project area will have more reliable water supplies in the dry season. Major beneficiaries will be women and disadvantaged groups.

The specific object is that the communities in selected climate-vulnerable mountain watersheds have access to more reliable water resources. The BCRWME is a pilot project that will demonstrate participatory watershed conservation and management planning specifically focusing on water resources. Demand driven/participatory project cycle processes and procedures for large scale interventions in watershed management that focus on water resources. The key rationale of the TA is to safeguard and mainstream the outcomes of the BCSWME pilot interventions into long-term climate oriented watershed management planning and associated investments in Nepal.

The results of the project are:

• Participating communities have improved catchment management and new or improved water storage infrastructure
• Communities and government manage water and land in an integrated and inclusive manner within watersheds
• Knowledge-based approaches for integrated water and land management and improved water reliability and accessibility in the wake of climate change adopted by government
